Digital Transformation of English Certification at ITS

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is committed to preparing its students for the global stage. Recognising that English proficiency is a “make-or-break” factor for both international employment and advanced studies, the Global Language Centre (GLC) sought a way to certify thousands of students efficiently and credibly.

The Challenge: Manual Barriers to Growth

Before partnering with EnglishScore, the GLC faced significant operational hurdles:

  • Efficiency & Scaling: Managing English testing for thousands of students annually through manual administrative processes was incredibly time-consuming.
  • Accessibility: Students were required to attend physical, on-campus test sessions, which created scheduling conflicts and limited participation.
  • Standardization: Maintaining a consistent, internationally recognized standard across a massive student body was a logistical challenge.

The Solution: A Mobile-First Approach

By adopting British Council EnglishScore, ITS transitioned to a fully digital, mobile-based testing ecosystem.

  • Flexibility: Students can now take the test anytime, anywhere, directly from their smartphones.
  • Instant Results: Test scores are available in less than five seconds upon completion.
  • Rapid Certification: Internationally standardized digital certificates are issued within 24 hours.

The Impact: Results at Scale

The shift to digital has yielded impressive results for the institution:

  • High Adoption: Over 4,000 students have already chosen EnglishScore over traditional testing options.
  • Resource Savings: Significant reduction in time, physical resources, and administrative workload.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Test data is stored automatically, allowing the GLC to extract aggregated reports for academic evaluation and program planning.
  • Student Satisfaction: Students have responded enthusiastically to the fast, professional, and flexible nature of the platform.

“For ITS, EnglishScore is not merely an assessment tool, but part of our broader commitment to producing graduates who are competitive, confident, and ready to compete at a global level.” — Cahyani Satiya Pratiwi, Head of GLC, ITS

[00:00 – 00:33] Introduction from Cahyani Satiya Pratiwi: ITS is committed to preparing future generations who are able to compete internationally. Through the Global Language Centre (GLC), we support the enhancement of students’ competencies, particularly English language proficiency, which is a key requirement for both employment and further study. By providing internationally recognised English language certification, our students obtain credible evidence of their proficiency and are better prepared to enter the global professional environment.

[00:34 – 00:57] Question: Before using EnglishScore, what challenges did GLC face in conducting English proficiency tests and certifications? One of our main challenges has been efficiency and standardisation as we manage English testing for thousands of students each year, making manual administrative processes highly time-consuming. Accessibility has also been a challenge, as students are required to attend on-campus test sessions, which is not always feasible for all students.

[00:58 – 01:25] Question: How does EnglishScore help GLC overcome those challenges? With EnglishScore, the entire process is fully digital. Students are able to take the test anytime and anywhere using their smartphones. Test results are available in less than five seconds after completion, and internationally standardised digital certificates are issued within 24 hours. This removes the need for face-to-face sessions, reduces administrative workload, and significantly accelerates service delivery for students.

[01:26 – 01:49] Question: So far, how has the adoption rate been among ITS students? Adoption has been very strong. To date, more than 4,000 ITS students have chosen EnglishScore over other English testing options available at the Global Language Centre. This high level of participation demonstrates that students perceive the platform as flexible, reliable, and relevant to their needs.

[01:50 – 02:15] Question: From GLC’s perspective, what are the most significant benefits achieved after using EnglishScore? We have achieved significant savings in time, effort, and resources. Test data are stored automatically, easily accessible, and can be extracted as aggregated reports. These insights enable us to map students’ English proficiency comprehensively and are highly valuable for academic evaluation, language program planning, and continuous improvement of teaching and learning quality.

[02:16 – 02:42] Question: How have students responded to using EnglishScore? Students have been enthusiastic. The fast testing process and digital certificates, which can be used immediately for employment purposes, make EnglishScore a highly suitable solution for our students. For ITS, EnglishScore is not merely an assessment tool, but part of our broader commitment to producing graduates who are competitive, confident, and ready to compete at a global level.

[02:43 – 03:16] Question: What are your hopes for students and other institutions in Indonesia? Our hope is that more Indonesian students will possess English language proficiency that meets international standards. We believe that EnglishScore plays an important role in strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesian graduates and in opening up greater opportunities for them in today’s globalised world.
