Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology to test over 2000 teachers using EnglishScore, British Council’s mobile English test

Jakarta, July 17th 2021: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Indonesia has today signed an agreement with British Council Indonesia to assess the English level of over two thousand High-School English teachers. The tests will be conducted remotely using EnglishScore, British Council’s mobile English test and certificate.

EnglishScore is British Council’s latest innovation, set to transform English language assessment on a global scale. It is a 40-minute test available on any smartphone and uses the device’s camera to prevent cheating. Test-takers receive a score aligned to an international standard, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The EnglishScore assessment forms part of a wider initiative called the Program Pendidikan Profesi Guru. The programme intends to map English teachers’ English proficiency across Indonesia, identifying teachers who require additional support and training. English teachers who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the title Gr (Profesi Guru).

High-quality English teachers are so important to Indonesia’s future prosperity. They can equip the next generation with the tools to succeed on the international stage. British Council’s EnglishScore platform will allow us to assess the proficiency of thousands of teachers in schools across the country.”

Dr. Praptono, M.Ed, Director of Professional Education and Development of Teachers and Education Personnel, Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology

As EnglishScore is available on mobile phones (Android and iOS), the programme can now reach English teachers living in remote locations across Indonesia, which has often presented logistical challenges in accessibility and internet connectivity.

Test results are shared with the Ministry via a secure online dashboard, with the ability to analyse individual or aggregated results and to screen test sittings for any fraudulent activity.

“We’re honoured to be supporting the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology in this important initiative. We’re really proud to be able to help the Ministry to assess the English level of teachers in previously hard to reach locations across Indonesia.”

Hugh Moffatt, Country Director British Council Indonesia

EnglishScore is growing in scale around the world with over 2 million new users per year in over 150 countries. Employers are using the tool for recruitment and training; approved universities can use EnglishScore to issue certificates to their graduating students.

Those looking to test their English level can access the EnglishScore app on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Institutions interested in using EnglishScore for wide-scale testing can learn more here.
